Day 294 – #6 Run from Lands End to John O’Groats – begun!

24 10 2010

I’ve started running again so thought I’d better update this challenge.  I haven’t run very far yet as I’ve been plagued by various illnesses, which is not like me at all!  But I’m back in the game and will gradually up my miles and add them to my LEJOG page as and when.

Day 294 – #55 50 New recipes

24 10 2010

Another new recipe tried out.  This is a Spanish Chicken & Chorizo Stew.  I made it for Laura’s birthday celebrations.  Mum & Kate made a load of tapas dishes and Kate made a paella.  This was contribution.  It was very nice actually.  Everything I tried was nice.  If a little on the hot side!!

Day 294 – #9 BBC Big Read List

24 10 2010

I’ve finally finished Great Expectations!  It’s taken me months to read.  Not because it was dull, far from it!  It’s just that I’ve had a lot on and have been very tired so haven’t been reading in the evenings.

It’s a great book.  I’m not sure that I’ve ever read any Dickens before.  But I definitely will try some others.  He’s very funny.  Some bits were a bit “wordy” but it’s a great read and I didn’t expect the twist in the tale at all!

Day 280 – #55 50 New Recipes

10 10 2010

Today’s new recipe is Tomato & Bacon Gnocchi Bake.  It’s another weight watchers recipe (from Fabulous and Filling) and is 6 points.

The gnocchi is ready made so it’s dead fast to prepare.  In total it takes about 1o minutes!  Bargain 🙂

Day 280 – #27 Go to the cinema 5 times

10 10 2010

I went to the cinema yesterday afternoon with 2 complete strangers and 1 relative stranger.  It wasn’t the best day out I’ve ever had but I went to see a film I wouldn’t normally bother with.

Eat Pray Love is massively hyped up and I really can’t see why.  Sure, some bits of it are quite good.  The section in Rome was brilliant (and quite appropriate at the moment!) and I loved seeing all the cobbled street and the Italian practise was useful.  However the section in India was SO boring.  Even the bit in Bali was too late to save the film.  Dull dull dull.  And it made me miss strictly.  I would imagine the book is worth reading.  I don’t think the film is worth seeing though 😦

Day 273 – #55 50 New Recipes

3 10 2010

In keeping with my weight watchers regime, I tried another new recipe which purported to be low in calories.  And to be fair, it would have been had I stuck to the amount of mozzarella stated!  Instead, I used a whole pack between the two of us instead of half a pack. 🙂

It was really nice.  And even with the extra mozzarella was only 6.5 points.  It was tasty and filling.  And very easy to make.  And the best bit?  I have another two portions in the freezer.  Sweet.

Day 273 – #60 Make fudge – updated

3 10 2010

As predicted, the fudge wasn’t right.  Even putting it in the fridge it didn’t set properly.  It was almost like toffee when I peeled it out of the tin.  Not right at all.

So today I tried again, for the third time!  This time I used a recipe from the Dairy Cook Book.  It had the same 4 ingredient (albeit the sugar was granulated, not soft brown) but with slightly more butter in this one.

It was looking fabulous, smelling gorgeous, reached 116 on my sugar thermometer.  The next instruction was to leave it for 5 mins to cool down.  So I did that.  Went back to it exactly 5 minutes later and the whole thing had separated!  Very bizarre.  So I boiled it again.  This time I did the soft ball test rather than use the thermometer as I’m not convinced that’s right.  It seemed to be ok.  So I beat it.  For ages!  (I definitely didn’t beat it for long enough before) and it started to come together!  At long last it was looking like fudge.  So got it in the tin – et voila!

Proper Fudge 🙂
